I haven't been on here for some time! This is my last post for some more time as well as I will be off travelling and volunteering around the world.

Ken Loach is a British director who has had much critical acclaim. His YouTube channel features some of his films in full so it's only right to link them here for you.

The Big Flame

'The Big Flame' was writer Jim Allen's second Wednesday Play (BBC, 1964-70), and his first with director Kenneth Loach. After 'The Lump' (tx. 1/2/1967), about the exploitation of casual labour in the building trade, Allen used his Marxist credentials to depict striking Liverpool dockers enacting a Communist-style system of workers' control.

His others are not embeddable but here are links to watch them externally.

Cathy, Come Home - From the BBC's influential 'Wednesday Play' series. This tells the bleak tale of Cathy, who loses her home, husband and eventually her child through the inflexibility of the British welfare system. A grim picture is painted of mid-sixties London, realistic, but the viewer cannot but realise that a political point is being made. One of the consequences of this film was the formation of the housing charity 'Shelter'.

The Gamekeeper - A simple tale of a year in the life of a Gamekeeper. From the troubles involved in rearing the pheasants and dealing with predators (poachers and foxes). The gamekeeper shows us all the good things about living so close to nature. The end of his year comes with the organised shoot. He has the sudden pressure of dealing with a lot of people, (beaters, the guns and "the master") and ensuring that everyone has a good day and stays safe.

Land and Freedom - 1936. David an unemployed young man, leaves Liverpool to join the fight against Fascism in the early days of the Spanish Civil War. He joins an international section of the Republican Militia on the Aragon front where he experiences the trials and anguish of the war.

Looks and Smiles - It's 1980 in Sheffield and Mick and Alan have just left school, full of dreams for the future. But against the background of Thatcher's Britain the two soon wake up reality, facing daily rejection in their search for work.

Scrooge (1935)

Not quite so highly rated at 6.5/10, this is the first sound version of the Charles Dickens' story. Seymour Hicks plays the title role in the first sound version of the Dickens classic about the miser who's visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. This British import is notable for being the only adaptation of this story with an invisible Marley's Ghost and its Expressionistic cinematography. This is the uncut 78 minute version.

The Man Who Planted Trees (1987)

This is a beautiful French story that was made into an animation directed by Frédéric Back. It is the story of one shepherd's long and successful singlehanded effort to re-forest a desolate valley. Very moving, it is appropriate for both children and adults.

All Quiet On The Western Front (1930)

This is a classic of the cinema, now in the public domain. Adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque, the film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered.

Man With A Movie Camera (1929)

This film is famous for the range of cinematic techniques Vertov invents, deploys or develops, such as double exposure, fast motion, slow motion, freeze frames, jump cuts, split screens, Dutch angles, extreme close-ups, tracking shots, footage played backwards, animations, and a self-reflexive style(at one point it features a split screen tracking shot; the sides have opposite Dutch angles).

Peak Oil (2006)/ The Power of Community (2006)

This is not strictly a film or documentary but a presentation by Richard Heinberg. I've posted this because "The End of Suburbia" is unavailable online but this covers the same kind of ground. It is about the fact that peak oil production is happening right now and all the research behind it. Don't ever believe anything that the oil companies tell you, what the American media or politicians tell you about it not running out. It is... those people have a lot of money at stake, independent researchers don't. So watch this, it's less than an hour and then watch the other video below to see that it does not actually spell impending doom for the planet.

The Power of Community

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens.

This is to include the many recent public licence documentaries that have been made and are about analysing the past and present and proposals for the future. Already Zeitgeist and Home will be found under that category. This one, The Take, I have watched and recommend it to show how the capitalist system can be replaced.

In suburban Buenos Aires, thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats, and refuse to leave. All they want is to re-start the silent machines. With The Take, director Avi Lewis, one of Canada's most outspoken journalists, and writer Naomi Klein, author of the international bestseller No Logo, champion a radical economic manifesto for the 21st century. Panorama Ephemera is a collage of sequences drawn from a wide variety of ephemeral (industrial, advertising, educational and amateur) films, touring the conflicted landscapes of twentieth-century America. The films' often-skewed visions construct an American history filled with horror and hope, unreeling in familiar and unexpected ways.
It focuses on familiar and mythical activities and images in America (1626-1978). Many creatures and substances that we hardly notice because we feel so used to them take centre stage, including pigs, corn, water, telephones, fire, and rice. At first resembling a compilation, it soon reveals itself as a journey through the American landscape over time, and the story begins to emerge between the sequences.

Hilarious romantic comedy starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Russell is rough and tumble reporter looking to get out of the news racket by marrying and becoming a house wife after her divorce from newspaper publisher Grant. Just when she is about to leave town with her husband-to-be the still lovesick Grant drafts her to cover one final breaking news sensation.
Nb: There is a slight audio sync problem in the first couple minutes of the film. It is present on the source medium and is very brief.

The Vagabond was a silent film by Charlie Chaplin and his third film with Mutual Films. Released in 1916, it co-starred Edna Purviance, Eric Campbell, Leo White and Lloyd Bacon. This film echoed Chaplin's work on The Tramp, with more drama mixed in with comedy. The story begins with Charlie, playing music to raise money, and instead finds the abused girl (played by Edna) living in a gypsy camp. As in The Tramp, he works on finding a way to help her.

Dumb luck sets some policemen on his trail -- after a series of innovative escapes, he gets mistaken for a murderer with a price on his head, which means the people that aren't chasing him are fleeing from him.

Never Weaken (1921)

Never Weaken is a 1921 silent comedy film starring Harold Lloyd and directed by Fred Newmeyer. It was Lloyd's last short film, running to three reels, before he moved permanently into feature-length production. It was also one of his trademark "thrill" comedies, featuring him dangling from a tall building. Lloyd and his crew honed and perfected their "thrill" filming techniques in this film, and put them to astonishing use in the 1923 classic feature Safety Last!

The Junky's Christmas (1993)

This is a brilliant claymation short film of the William Burroughs' story of the same name. Made in 1993, it follows the story of Danny the Carwiper, a drug addict who is out looking for a way to get his fix. It's narrated by Burroughs himself and even though it only scores 7/10 on IMDB, I think it's excellent and certainly worth posting here.

I feel I need to expand a little on the info in the header box. Whereas you'll already know that it's about aggregating full streaming films from various sites, I want to point out the legality of this venture. Those films that I find on sites like YouTube and Google Video I assume to be public licence, that is - free to distribute to anyone. You will notice, as I add more, that most of the films are old.
It makes sense really as newer films aren't generally going to be available for free. But in the case of documentaries like Zeitgeist and Home, the whole intention is that they are freely available to watch.
I'll only post films that have at least a 5/10 rating on IMDB.com. I don't want to fill up this blog with rubbish!
From this, you can expect to see newer films/ documentaries (as long as they aren't just some cheap attempt to create a conspiracy, they have to have a decent rating overall), films from the 60s back to the 20s and maybe even earlier.
I've been notified of archive.org which also has lists of films that you can legally download for free. They are similar to the ones I'll link to here but I feel that, for one, "archive" is a cumbersome site which takes ages to get anywhere and two, this blog is so that you don't have to download the films. Just click on your choice and you're away.
I will also link to films in other languages and make a note of what language they are in. Unless there are already subtitles on the films, they won't be available. There's nothing I can do about that.
I'd like to be able to provide an enjoyable service in this way and as mentioned at the top, your help would also be appreciated to locate more films that are legally streamed. Just send me an email (the address under the counter) with the link and if there's no information, your synopsis of the film.
Otherwise, feel free to leave your comments about the films, suggestions for the blog and your appreciations for my efforts. ;)
